Folks, if you have not seen this movie, you really should. Let me be a little more specific: if you like a cool action film with a highly unusual premise behind the story, you will LOVE this film! Years ago, I was turned on to this movie by a friend of mine who had only seen a part of the movie. He knew of my love of all things Irish so he recomended that I check it out. I was in Sam Goody one day (yes, it was THAT long ago) and I stumble upon it in the bargain bin of VHS tapes (yes, I still have a working VCR). So, I decide on buying it, having no idea what I was getting into.
Years later, and having bought several other copies on DVD for friends and relatives, I can safely say that this is one of my most beloved films of all time. It is impossible for me to say just how truly grand this movie is, but I will offer up some small tidbits. Willem Dafoe, Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flannery, and Billy Connolly are absolutely delightful as their characters in this movie. Connolly has never appeared more rough and mean than in this role as "the Duke". Dafoe steals every scene he is in with role as Agent Paul Smecker - and I mean that folks, if you like Dafoe, you will LOVE this film! Reedus and Flannery play the title characters as the McManus brothers, and they are perfect! They have a very simple attire for the movie, but it is effective and amplified by their tatoos. Any one know Latin? Pay attention to their hands.
The music really unites the film together and helps truly to take this film to a level far beyond its meager budget. There are some fantastic supporting characters, most especially Doc and Rocco. Heck, there's even a porn star in a nice acting bit here, the "legendary" Ron Jeremy. The film has been an underground sensation for years and many college students know this film well. However, if you have never seen it, I highly recommend this movie.
Come join us at the Weinberg Center on April 2nd for a rare opportunity to see this movie on the big screen! There will be a happy hour preceeding the film beginning at 6:00 PM. Don't miss this film!
