The times I have been out in Frederick, and it must be either my luck or lack of hopping around, but I have not noticed any bands playing other cultural music. I am talking live bands. Can someone tell me otherwise? If you do know of them, tell me who they are?
Mexicalli Cantina used to have bands with authentic music. I don't know if they still do that however. Las time I was there I noticed a sign for live country music which was strange. If you ask they will let you know though, they probably still do some special nights every now and then.
I think you need to get out of Frederick for that sort of entertainment however. Fusion and another local bar have Latin night but they don't get busy until late and it is with a DJ, not live. We tend to stick to latin house-parties ourselves.
Hello Garth,
Frederick has a long history of NOT being cultural. It's really a shame but the truth. Maybe before I pass on you MIGHT see something to resemble cultural diversity.
Since I returned to Frederick back in November I have looked and asked many people about Salsa and Meringue. None that they know of. Ranchero music? Nada. Talking to the musicians from the area ... they say go to DC and Baltimore for this stuff. The word is the clubs in Frederick don't want to pay for good musicians. They would rather get a local young band for $200 than a group that will cost them $2000. Even Mariachis cost good money and unless the establishment is willing to pay them they won't book them. That's what I have found out so far but my search isn't over yet.
The Mariache Restaurant has live mariache from 7-10 on Thursdays
There was a live salsa performance at Pagea too.
Salsa will arrive in Frederick soon enough; when there is enough demand to support the expense
